Pachymetry

Pachymetry

Pachymetry is a quick and painless diagnostic test that measures the thickness of the cornea — the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye. Corneal thickness plays a vital role in diagnosing and managing eye conditions, particularly glaucoma and corneal diseases, as well as determining suitability for refractive surgeries like LASIK.
Pachymetry can be performed using ultrasound (contact) or optical (non-contact) methods.

Uses

  • Glaucoma assessment – Corneal thickness affects intraocular pressure (IOP) readings, which are critical for glaucoma diagnosis.
  • Pre-LASIK and other refractive surgery evaluations – Ensures the cornea is thick enough for safe surgery.
  • Keratoconus detection – Identifies abnormal corneal thinning.
  • Corneal disease monitoring – Tracks changes in corneal thickness over time.
  • Post-surgical evaluation – Monitors healing after corneal surgery or transplant.

Benefits & Advantages

  • Quick, safe, and painless
  • Helps in accurate glaucoma diagnosis by adjusting IOP readings
  • Guides safe planning for LASIK and other refractive surgeries
  • Detects early signs of corneal disease like keratoconus
  • Useful in long-term monitoring of corneal health
  • Available in both contact and non-contact methods
