Combined Eye Surgeries
Combined eye surgeries refer to procedures where two or more eye conditions are treated simultaneously during a single surgical session. This integrated approach is particularly beneficial for patients who require both cataract surgery and management of co-existing conditions like glaucoma, retinal disorders, or corneal complications. Performing combined surgeries not only reduces the need for multiple operations but also minimizes patient recovery time, anesthesia exposure, and overall surgical risks.
By addressing multiple issues at once, these procedures help achieve better long-term visual outcomes, improve patient comfort, and enhance surgical efficiency. Proper planning and customization are essential to ensure that each component of the combined surgery supports the other and contributes to optimal eye health.
Combined Procedures
Phacoemulsification is combined with other procedures in patients with specific indications
(a) Glaucoma patients with poor Intraocular pressure control on medical therapy and also has a significant Cataract. In these patients Phacoemulsification with Intraocular Lens is combined with a Glaucoma procedure
(b) Patients with surgically amenable VR pathologies and a significant cataract are advised to under Phacoemulsification-IOL + Vitrectomy or Scleral Buckle procedure.
Types of Combined Eye Surgeries
Phacoemulsification with Glaucoma Surgery
This procedure combines cataract removal with glaucoma filtration surgery (like trabeculectomy or valve implantation). It is especially effective for patients with coexisting cataract and high intraocular pressure. The surgery helps in restoring clear vision while also lowering eye pressure to protect the optic nerve.
Phacoemulsification with Vitrectomy Surgery
Used for patients with cataracts and retinal conditions (e.g., macular hole, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy), this procedure involves removing the cataract and performing a vitrectomy in the same session. It eliminates visual obstruction from the cataract and allows direct access to the retina for precise treatment.
Phacoemulsification with Scleral Buckling Surgery
In cases of retinal detachment combined with cataract, this surgery helps reattach the retina using a scleral buckle while also clearing the cataract to restore vision. It's a carefully coordinated procedure performed under detailed planning.
IOL Exchange or Repositioning with Other Procedures
When previously implanted intraocular lenses (IOLs) become dislocated or cause vision disturbances, they can be repositioned or replaced during combined surgeries. These may be paired with glaucoma or retina procedures, depending on the associated condition.
Benefits of Combined Surgeries
Fewer hospital visits and anesthesia exposure
By addressing multiple eye issues in a single procedure, patients avoid repeated hospital admissions and reduce the risks associated with undergoing anesthesia multiple times.
Faster overall recovery
Combining surgeries allows the healing process to begin and complete in one go, rather than restarting recovery after each separate operation. This leads to a shorter total recovery period.
Enhanced patient comfort and convenience
Patients benefit from a more streamlined treatment plan, requiring fewer appointments and less disruption to their daily life, making the overall process more manageable and less stressful.
Comprehensive vision correction in one sitting
When conditions like cataract and glaucoma or retinal disorders are treated together, patients enjoy an all-in-one solution that improves both visual clarity and eye health in a single surgical session.
Cost-effective compared to multiple separate surgeries
A combined surgical approach often reduces total medical expenses by minimizing hospital charges, surgical fees, and medication costs compared to undergoing separate procedures.
