A-Scan, B-Scan

Quick Links

A-Scan

A-Scan ultrasound uses sound waves to measure the length of the eyeball and other internal structures. It is most commonly used in cataract surgery planning to calculate the correct intraocular lens (IOL) power.

Uses

  • Determining axial length of the eye
  • Calculating IOL power before cataract surgery
  • Detecting abnormal eye size in certain conditions (myopia, hyperopia)

Benefits & Advantages

  • Provides highly accurate eye measurements
  • Essential for ensuring clear vision after cataract surgery
  • Quick, painless, and non-invasive procedure
  • Improves surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction

B-Scan

B-Scan ultrasonography creates a two-dimensional cross-sectional image of the eye and the orbit. It is particularly useful when the view of the retina is obscured by conditions such as dense cataract, corneal opacity, or vitreous haemorrhage.

Uses

  • Detecting retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, and tumors
  • Assessing eye structure in advanced cataracts
  • Evaluating trauma-related damage
  • Diagnosing posterior segment diseases when direct visualization is not possible

Benefits & Advantages

  • Allows imaging even when the front structures of the eye are opaque
  • Helps in early detection of serious retinal and vitreous disorders
  • Guides treatment decisions for complex eye conditions
  • Non-invasive, quick, and comfortable for the patient
